Simplicity

What is simplicity?

To me, simplicity is about elimination, clarity, truth, efficiency, openness, complexity, elegance, frugality, mindfulness and sustainablity. In no special order.

Elimination

Simplicity is about learning when to say no. It’s the ability to discard and eliminate the non-essentials. It’s about making clear decisions, setting and embracing constraints (timebox, limit scope…) and priorities. It’s a trade-off, a balancing act. Simplicity it’s reducing to the essentials in order to find meaning.

“It’s not information overload. It’s filter failure.”

“The most important decisions you make are not the things you do, but the things that you decide not to do. He’s a minimalist.”

“No is easier to do. Yes is easier to say.”

“You’ll rarely regret cutting scope.”

“”Just because” “You never know” “Imagine if” “Just in case” - these are the seeds of complexity.”

“Simplicity is an exact medium between too little and too much.”

“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.”

“Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in elimination of non-essentials.”

“The essence of the 80-20 rule is this: focus on what’s important and eliminate or minimize what isn’t.”

“It’s the kind of clear insight for which all designers and inventors strive: beauty in the simplicity of using constraints as advantages.”

Clarity

Simplicity is about being concise, striving for clarity and, in the end, searching for wisdom and enlightenment.

“If you have to convince yourself it’s simple then it’s not simple.”

“Clutter and confusion are failures of design, not attributes of information.”

“If you can’t write your idea on the back of my calling card, you don’t have a clear idea.”

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

“When thought is too weak to be expressed simply, it’s clear proof that it should be rejected.”

“True eloquence consists of saying all that should be said, and that only.”

“Genius is the ability to reduce the complicated to the simple.”

“Complication is what happens when you try to solve a problem you don’t understand.”

“It is the essence of genius to make use of the simplest ideas.”

“The obvious is that which is never seen until someone expresses it simply.”

“It the proof of high culture to say the greatest matters in the simplest way.”

“Like many intellectuals, he was incapable of saying a simple thing in a simple way.”

“Most of the fundamental ideas of science are essentially simple, and may, as a rule, be expressed in a language comprehensible to everyone.”

Truth

Simplicity is connecting with the essence of things. It’s a quest for the underlying truth.

“Nothing is true, but that which is simple.”

“The simplest things are often the truest.”

“Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.”

“All things being equal, the simplest solution tends to be the best one.”

“People who pride themselves on their “complexity” and deride others for being “simplistic” should realize that the truth is often not very complicated. What gets complex is evading the truth.”

“The great seal of truth is simplicity.”

“I searched through rebellion, drugs, diet, mysticism, religion, intellectual-ism and much more, only to find that truth is basically simple and feels good, clear and right.”

“The main purpose of science is simplicity and as we understand more things, everything is becoming simpler.”

“The greatest truths are the simplest: and so are the greatest men.”

Efficiency

Simplicity paves the way to efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.

“Simplicity means the achievement of maximum effect with minimum means.”

“Maximum efficiency with minimum effort.”

Openness

Shoshin, the beginner’s mind. An attitude of openness, eagerness, and lack of preconceptions. Simplicity is about being open and creative.

“A childlike mind in its simplicity practises that science of good to which the wise may be blind.”

“The wisest keeps something of the vision of a child. Though he may understand a thousand things that a child could not understand, he is always a beginner, close to the original meaning of life.”

“From naive simplicity we arrive at more profound simplicity.”

“A truly great man never puts away the simplicity of a child.”

“Regarding the distinction between simplicity and simplistic… I relate it to the difference between childlike and childish. Simplicity and being childlike are sattvic, conscious, full awareness with a sense of wonder and discovery. Simplistic is neglecting to acknowledge and adequately consider the complexities of a situation. […] With simplicity we respond to the complexities of life with freshness and childlike enthusiasm.”

Complexity

Simplicity and complexity. Two sides of the same coin. Which one comes first, the big picture or the details?. Little instructions can lead to complex results and vice versa. They are interrelated. Simple does not mean simplistic, complex does not mean complicated.

“Context is everything.”

“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but no simpler.”

“Simplicity is hard to build, easy to use, and hard to charge for. Complexity is easy to build, hard to use, and easy to charge for.”

“It’s simple until you make it complicated.”

“Simple things should be simple. Complex things should be possible.”

“Making the simple complicated is commonplace; making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity.”

“The KISS principle states that simplicity should be a key goal in design, and that unnecessary complexity should be avoided.”

“The art of simplicity is a puzzle of complexity.”

“Simplicity does not precede complexity, but follows it.”

“The complexity of things - the things within things - just seems to be endless. I mean nothing is easy, nothing is simple.”

“The complex develops out of the simple.”

“The whole is simpler than the sum of its parts.”

“The sculptor produces the beautiful statue by chipping away such parts of the marble block as are not needed - it is a process of elimination.”

“Divide each difficulty into as many parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it.”

“Simple style is like white light. It is complex, but does not seem so.”

“Very simple ideas lie within the reach only of complex minds.”

“No matter how complicated a problem is, it usually can be reduced to a simple, comprehensible form which is often the best solution.”

“The more you step back, embrace complexity, the better chance you have of finding simple answers, and it’s often different than the simple answer that you started with.”

“For any problem, the more you can zoom out and embrace complexity, the better chance you have of zooming in on the simple details that matter most.”

“People enjoy simplicity - a low level of challenge - when they are dealing with something new - something for which they have a low level of the required skills. People enjoy complexity - a high level of challenge - when they are dealing with something they know a lot about - something for which they have a high level ofthe required skills. So when people are apathetic about something, you should utilize simplicity, and when people are in the flow, you should utilize complexity.”

Elegance

Simplicity as a worldview. Seeking elegance and beauty at every level.

“Simplicity isn’t a design trend, it’s an attribute of good design.”

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

“I have deep faith that the principle of the universe will be beautiful and simple.”

“True elegance becomes the more so as it approaches simplicity.”

“A theory is the more impressive the greater the simplicity of its premises is, the more different kinds of things it relates, and the more extended is its area of applicability.”

“Something is elegant if it is two things at once: unusually simple and surprisingly powerful.”

“Simplicity, carried to an extreme, becomes elegance.”

Frugality

Simplicity it’s about minimalism and frugality. It’s about appreciating authenticity and craftsmanship but not trying to find happiness in possessions or consumerism.

“He just didn’t believe in having lots of things around but he was incredibly careful in what he selected.”

“Unnecessary possessions are unnecessary burdens. If you have them, you have to take care of them.”

“It is those who have enough but not too much who are the happiest.”

“There is great freedom in simplicity of living.”

“In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex.”

“Frugality is one of the most beautiful and joyful words in the English language, and yet one that we are culturally cut off from understanding and enjoying. The consumption society has made us feel that happiness lies in having things, and has failed to teach us the happiness of not having things.”

“I don’t need a lot of money. Simplicity is the answer for me.”

“Wealth consists not in having great possessions but in having few wants.”

“We don’t need to increase our goods nearly as much as we need to scale down our wants. Not wanting something is as good as possessing it.”

“You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need.”

“Reduce the complexity of life by eliminating the needless wants of life, and the labors of life reduce themselves.”

“A few strong instincts and a few plain rules suffice us.”

“Simplicity is making the journey of this life with just baggage enough.”

Mindfulness

Simplicity is an attitude towards life. It’s about being present and having focus. It’s about being agile, knowing when to release control and unplan. Doing your best without falling into the perfectionism trap. It’s about being adaptive and resilient. Timeless.

“Simplicity is a state of mind.”

“Live mindful of how brief your life is.”

“Gladly accept the gifts of the present hour.”

Sustainability

Simplicity is about organic growth. Simplicity is a hard skill to master. It requires thoughtful practice, a continual striving for improvement. Work at it hard enough and you can make it seem effortless, but it takes a lot of effort to get there. It’s an iterative process.

“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage — to move in the opposite direction.”

“Progress is man’s ability to complicate simplicity.”

“Life is not complex. We are complex. Life is simple, and the simple thing is the right thing.”

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

“Simplicity is an acquired taste. Mankind, left free, instinctively complicates life. ”

“Man is an over-complicated organism. If he is doomed to extinction he will die out for want of simplicity.”

“There is a master key to success with which no man can fail. Its name is simplicity, simplicity I mean in the sense of reducing to the simplest possible terms every problem that besets us.”

“It’s so easy to complicate your life, it’s so hard to simplify it.”

“What does growth mean to you? More people? More revenues? More expenses? More complexity? More of anything is a good thing?.”

“You don’t need to outdo the competition. It’s expensive and defensive. Underdo your competition. We need more simplicity and clarity.”

Why simplicity?

Because simplicity reduces confusion, and thus shortens the path to happiness.
